Infographic – grow your own herbs
Fresh herbs are a great way to add flavour to meals and they are easy to grow from seed at home. Now is the time to sow seeds of lots of culinary herbs including basil, rosemary and thyme. Keep them on a warm windowsill or propagator until they germinate then prick the seedlings out and put into a larger pot to allow space for the plant to develop.
Basil is not very hardy so will thrive better all year round in a pot indoors. Tougher plants such as thyme and mint and rosemary can withstand the cold, so can be planted out once seedlings get to a reasonable size. Simply harden them off in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse before planting into the soil.
By growing your own herbs you can add lots of extra flavour and freshness to your home cooked delicacies as well as take satisfaction in watching your herbs grow. You’ll also save money by reducing the need for you to buy fresh herbs at the supermarket!
